Approximately 90% of the Earth's ozone is located
in a natural layer immediately above the Earth's
surface, known as the stratosphere.

This natural layer formed by the ozone acts as a
protective shield against the ultraviolet rays.
The primary concern about the probable
destruction of the ozone layer by the CFCs was
raised when the theory was published that chlorine
atoms released by the CFCs could migrate as far
as the stratosphere and destroy the ozone
molecules (Molina & Rowland, 1974).
